Bruketa&: 30 years of effective communications for banks, financial institutions and insurers

Bruketa& projects for banks and insurers have earned 13 Effie recognitions, including two European finalist placements for Addiko Bank and a 2025 Sustained Success award for LAQO’s communications platform featuring Pavle Pauq.

BBC’s Tech Life featured “Your Posture Is Your Future”, a project by Bruketa& for Croatia Polyclinics that uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to analyse the posture of passers-by.

Bruketa& is an independent strategy and creative agency based in Zagreb, with more than 30 years of experience across Central and Southeast European markets. It helps brands define a relevant role in people’s lives and bring it to life through their brand universe, communications, services and customer experience. The agency’s work has been recognised at Cannes Lions, the Effie Awards, D&AD and Red Dot, with hundreds of other awards to its name. What matters far more than awards is what an idea achieves for a business and the people it is intended to serve.

That is why, at Bruketa&, a solution does not begin with a format. The starting point is the problem to solve. Once the business challenge, the brand’s context and the human need behind them are understood, the agency identifies the form of solution that can make the greatest difference. Sometimes that means communications. Sometimes it means a product, a space or a digital service. And sometimes it means something that did not previously exist.

The “Midlife Crisis Loan” is part of Bruketa&’s concept for Addiko Bank, which presents cash loans through specific situations in people’s lives.

Bruketa& has built its banking and insurance experience over three decades. Its clients have included Zagrebačka banka (UniCredit Group), Addiko Bank across six markets, UniCredit in Hungary, PBZ, part of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, Raiffeisen bank Croatia, KentBank, Croatia banka, Pasha Bank and Xalq Bank in Azerbaijan, Prva banka Crne Gore in Montenegro, the World Bank Group, Croatia Insurance, LAQO and GRAWE.

How do you give people a personal connection to a century-old institution, in the decade following a major economic crisis, when trust in banks could no longer be taken for granted? For Zagrebačka banka’s centenary in 2014, the answer was a campaign designed to last a literal hundred years. From April to July, we collected memorabilia from individuals and businesses through bank branches and social media, storing it free of charge in a “Time Vault”. The vault is located at the bank’s headquarters, where Gradska štedionica, Zagrebačka banka’s predecessor, began operating in 1914. It will not reopen until 2114. Each participant received a contract printed on specially durable paper. Anyone presenting that contract a hundred years later will receive the memorabilia deposited in 2014. The message became a tangible promise: this bank intends to be here in another hundred years. The project won Effie and MIXX awards. Following the campaign, more than 50% of the public associated Zagrebačka banka with security and trust. Among people who were not customers, 22% expressed an interest in starting a relationship with the bank, while 39% of existing customers wanted to expand theirs.*

Addiko Bank: loans for life’s occasions and the region’s first digital branch

The agency’s most recent brand experiences were created for its longstanding client, Addiko Bank. In a market where financial products tend to sound almost identical, Addiko and Bruketa& started with a simple insight: people are looking for a way to solve a problem or fulfil a wish. This led to a new communications concept based on Addiko’s existing cash loan: loans for different occasions in life. The range includes the “Midlife Crisis Loan”, “Tattoo Removal Loan”, “Best Man Loan”, “Facelift Loan”, “New Hair Loan” and many more. Each addresses a specific situation. The concept also took physical form in boxes designed to look like products on retail shelves, giving loans a presence where the need arises: in car dealerships, cosmetic surgery clinics, furniture showrooms and shops of all kinds.

Alongside addressing the tensions people experience when applying for a loan, the agency worked with Addiko to tackle another obstacle: the inconvenience of visiting a bank. In early 2019, the region’s first fully digital branch opened, allowing the entire process, from application to electronic signature, to be completed at a click. Two different problems led to two different solutions because the starting point was the customer. The agency also designed a hybrid digital and physical branch, where customers could complete their banking through a digital application with assistance from bankers on site. Addiko Bank campaigns have received recognition at Effie competitions in Croatia and Europe.

KentBank: repositioning around “A bank where every banker is your personal banker” and KentClub

KentBank was repositioned around the insight “A bank where every banker is your personal banker”, and the rebrand won a Red Dot Award. According to its 2025 business report, following the rebrand KentBank became Croatia’s fastest-growing bank.

The idea of a personal relationship also shaped the customer experience. KentBank focuses on higher-income individuals and small and medium-sized businesses. KentClub became part of that proposition: a club designed to connect people, provide resources and create value for everyone involved. A space within the branch was set aside for meetings and the exchange of ideas, filling to capacity month after month. It hosted the Festival of Ideas, bringing together people from different business sectors to share their experience with an audience eager to learn. The brand positioning became something customers could experience for themselves.

Croatia Polyclinics: an AI-powered outdoor display that analyses posture

Insurance is another financial sector in which the agency has extensive experience. Its work with Croatia Insurance and Croatia Polyclinics has included projects encouraging people to take care of their health. The out-of-home brand experience “Your Posture Is Your Future” for Croatia Polyclinics / Croatia Insurance used an interactive digital outdoor display to analyse the posture of passers-by in real time, using artificial intelligence and computer vision. By analysing eight key points on the body, the system assessed the curvature of the neck and the middle and lower back. It then displayed personalised feedback highlighting potential irregularities. People whose scans indicated irregularities were offered the option to book an appointment with a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist. AI enabled the advertisement to respond to each person, turning a general message about spinal health into an experience with personal relevance.

The campaign received recognition at the Effie Awards, MIXX Awards Europe, Cannes Lions and numerous other international and local competitions. It attracted the attention of the BBC and was covered by LBB (UK), Ads of the World (US), Best Ads on TV (Australia), The Stable (Australia), Youmark (Italy), The Inspiration (Denmark), Nowymarketing (Poland), Proto (Poland), Outdoor (Russia) and many other outlets. The campaign also recorded 106,000 scans and a 46% increase in preventive examinations, indicating that the experience encouraged people to take action. The outdoor display became the first point of contact in the customer experience.*

Croatia Insurance: AI Anxiety Meter, an interactive outdoor display about mental health

The “AI Anxiety Meter” campaign for Croatia Insurance also brought together artificial intelligence, interactive media and health. Starting from the finding that half of Croatian citizens experience anxiety, Croatia Insurance and Bruketa& decided to take the subject of mental health into the street. Together with Go2Digital, they developed AI Anxiety Meter, known in Croatia as Brigometar: a digital outdoor display equipped with a camera and AI software. Using machine learning, it analysed facial expressions and displayed an estimate of a person’s level of worry within seconds. The system adapted its message to each passer-by and offered those with the highest estimated worry levels a free preventive examination at Croatia Polyclinics. AI enabled personalised communication in real time, turning an encounter with an advertisement into a prompt to take care of one’s health.

Dwell time at AI Anxiety Meter was 817% longer than the digital out-of-home advertising average, and 8% of the urban population tried it. The project also recorded a 31.22% increase in completed preventive examinations, a 24% increase in purchase intention for Croatia Insurance products and a 21.8% increase in health insurance policies sold.*

AI Anxiety Meter received recognition at Cannes Lions, MIXX Awards Europe and numerous other international and local competitions. It appeared in more than 300 media outlets worldwide, including Insider, US broadcasters FOX, ABC, CBS and NBC, and the Washington Psychiatric Society. Trade coverage included the international marketing publication Contagious, Adobo Magazine, LBBonline and Spain’s Marketing Directo.

Croatia Insurance: exhibitions for its 133rd and 140th anniversaries

For Croatia Insurance’s 133rd anniversary in 2017, Zagreb’s entire Grič Tunnel became a multimedia journey through time, exploring 133 years of intertwined Croatian, Zagreb and company history, alongside the personal histories of citizens and visitors. The exhibits covered 13 decades, with multimedia and set design turning each period into a different emotional experience. We collected 5,370 personal stories through social media and incorporated them into the exhibition. This was a history exhibition with room for everyone’s story.

The campaign won Effie and MIXX awards, alongside numerous other honours. With 103,000 visitors, it was Croatia’s most visited exhibition in 2017, and visitors spent an average of 30 minutes there. The project generated 4,958,787 impressions through earned media coverage and 616,314 reactions on social media.*

Seven years later, the 140th anniversary of Croatia’s oldest and largest insurance company turned the focus to the future. “Croatia 2074” allowed visitors to travel forward in time to 2074 and glimpse what might lie ahead. Developed with around 30 leading Croatian scientists, experts and artists, the project aimed to encourage public discussion and more responsible thinking about Croatia’s future.

The project received recognition at MIXX, IdejaX and BalCannes. These projects share a way of thinking that goes beyond media or technology: they are experiences in which people participate.

LAQO: brand character Pavle Pauq becomes an AI assistant on WhatsApp

LAQO is Croatia’s first fully digital insurance brand. In 2020, it gained a recognisable face in Pavle Pauq, a spider character who gave personality and a more human point of contact to a product without physical branches.

In 2023, Pavle Pauq took on a new role. Developed with Infobip using a GPT model on Microsoft Azure, LAQO’s AI assistant began providing personalised answers to customers’ questions on WhatsApp, around the clock, in the voice of the familiar character. The brand character became a conversational interface and part of customer service. In the age of AI bots, we found that people dislike talking to “fake” humans but are perfectly happy talking to a spider.

According to Infobip, the AI assistant handled 30% of customer enquiries, while 90% of enquiries were resolved in just three to five messages. Contact centre workload fell by 10%, allowing the team to focus more on complex cases and new customers (data source).

LAQO’s long-term communications platform received an Effie Award.

The same approach beyond financial services

We apply the same thinking beyond financial services. The starting point is always the problem to solve. The decision about whether the answer should be communications, a product, a service, technology or an experience comes afterwards.

Slovenian winery Radgonske gorice, with 170 years of sparkling wine tradition, wanted to expand its international presence. Bruketa& proposed creating a new product based on the finding that exposure to light can negatively affect the aroma of sparkling wine. The result was “Untouched by Light”, a sparkling wine produced, packaged and tasted in complete darkness, designed to attract international distributors and media. The project generated more than 400 pieces of global media coverage, including in The Washington Post and Bloomberg. In 2021, it won a Lion at Cannes Lions, the leading global festival of creativity.

In 2024, the agency developed “A Soup to Remember” for pasta producer Marodi. To help preserve Međimurje folk songs, inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list, it created a limited-edition collection of five books. Each came with a special pack of Marodi alphabet soup pasta containing the exact number of letters needed to spell out the song. The project won a Lion at Cannes Lions, an Effie, a MIXX award and numerous other international and local honours.

For Hrvatski Telekom, the agency developed the HT GPS Locator campaign, connecting technology and a product with the real problem of missing pets. The idea offered owners greater peace of mind through a GPS locator while raising wider awareness of missing dogs. The campaign attracted international attention, with more than 20 international and 30 domestic media placements, including Ad Age, Adland, Ads of the World, Lürzer’s Archive and Little Black Book. It generated 1.39 million social media views, more than 6,300 ad interactions and, most significantly for the business, a 288% increase in sales and a 38% improvement in brand perception.* The project received recognition at the Effie Awards, Cresta and numerous other international and local competitions.

For A1 Telekom, the agency developed “Lappsus”, a mobile application that helps people improve their spelling. When users unlocked their phones, it presented a spelling question with two possible answers, rewarding each correct answer with extra mobile data. Within three weeks of launch, it became the most popular Croatian application on Google Play, with more than 50,000 downloads. The project received a WPPed Cream Award for its progressive use of mobile technology, among work from more than 230 WPP agencies worldwide.

BOSQAR INVEST is a fast-growing European investment group and company builder. Having outgrown its former identity as Meritus ulaganja, or Mplus Group, it needed a brand aligned with its international ambitions. The new brand strategy, built around the purpose of “making a lasting mark”, positions the group through expertise, reliability, entrepreneurial energy and its ability to transform companies. Inspired by the strength of the boškarin, an indigenous Istrian breed of cattle, the name and visual identity turn local heritage into a distinctive platform for European growth. The rebrand won a Red Dot Award.

In 2025, the agency rebranded IT company Span around three strategic areas: cybersecurity, cloud and AI. The new brand strategy includes a visual identity that “never sleeps”, communicating the company’s work to protect its clients in real time. Its key element, Priority Star, is a dynamic infographic showing the number of security alerts and support requests, symbolising Span’s round-the-clock presence and readiness. When employees arrive at the office, the symbol at the entrance already shows them how the night went. The rebrand received recognition at IdejaX, BalCannes and Zagreb Design Week, and was featured on Ads of the World.

An idea can become more than an advertisement

Across industries and three decades of work, media, technology and customer behaviour have changed. The principle has remained the same: start with a problem worth solving.

Sometimes a brand needs a campaign. Sometimes it needs a new product, service or customer experience. Technology can remove an obstacle, a space can create a community, and a brand character can become a channel for conversations with customers.

Creativity is most valuable when it is free to find the right form. By connecting an understanding of business and people with design, communications and technology, it can do more than attract attention. It can give people a reason to spend time with a brand, make something easier, prompt action or create value that did not exist before.

That is what these projects share, and how Bruketa& approaches its clients’ challenges: identifying what a brand can do to become more relevant, useful or valuable to people.

Sometimes the best advertising is something people never experience as advertising at all.
